  5.     The prosecution insists that she was in on the plot to use
  6. a fortune in bribes and plunder to buy a piece of Manhattan
  7. worth more than $160 million. Her lawyers paint a different
  8. Imelda Marcos. The First Lady of the Philippines, they say, was
  9. a woman innocently cooling her thousands of pairs of heels as
  10. the machinations of Malacanang Palace buzzed around her.

  12.     Jury selection for her trial on racketeering and other
  13. charges carrying up to 50 years in prison started last week in
  14. the same courtroom that saw the bravura performances of Leona
  15. Helmsley and Bess Myerson. For sheer Wagnerian greed, the tale
  16. of Imelda could put the Hotel Queen to shame. Jurors will have
  17. to decide whether a wife always knows what her husband is up
  18. to -- in this case, deposed President Ferdinand Marcos, who
  19. died last September. "The Marcoses were masters of deception,"
  20. said prosecutors. "They elevated three-card monte [a form of
  21. shell game] to an art form." Scoffed Marcos' lawyer, Gerry
  22. Spence: "In this country one doesn't become a criminal by
  23. sleeping with one's husband."
